I never did understand why TLC advised against chasing waterfalls. They are the most marvelous things. About an hour and a half drive from Naples, just inside the Molise region, is a tiny town called Carpinone, which hosts several cascate. In the middle of a hot Italian summer, nothing is more refreshing than dipping into a chilling mountain stream. The hike leading to the falls plunges you into a forest glade, which drops in temperature as you reach the rushing water. The falls are loud and the water a stark contrast to the surrounding heat. The town has a central information point, offering guided river-walks. From the central information point, you can access the trailheads to one of the town’s three waterfalls. The parking is free in the center of town, and gelato/caffe is, of course, available across the street. If the center lot is full, continue through town near the train station and park along the street.

After enjoying the main Cascata di Carpinone, you can hike (my guys went part of the way through the river) to another waterfall, Cascata Schioppo.

What my kids liked: A day in nature, swimming in the cold water, and bringing our dog!
Where to park: You can either park in the town center by the information point, or if that lot is full (it often is on Sundays), you can park along the street near the train station.
On the way home from your hike, about an hour south of Carpinone on the outskirts of Teano, consider stopping at a truly remarkable local winery/hotel. I Cacciagalli Wine Resort hosts an informative nature walk that guides patrons through a chestnut grove, olive orchard, vineyard and gardens brimming with lavender and other floral beauties. The renovations made by the owners are truly remarkable and the progress is highlighted on an informative sign posted outside. With plenty of parking and outdoor lights draped over a large patio by the natural pool, the place is ideal for gatherings or a small dinner. We booked through Booking.com for an overnight stay in 2023, and service was exceptional, the room beautiful and clean, and the property stunning. We cannot wait to go back!

Where to park: Parking is easy at the entrance to the property!
What my kids liked: They haven’t been to the winery! We had our anniversary dinner here, but hope to take them back to explore the grounds!
